The guests are Isaías Craveiro, a sleep apnea patient; Joaquim Moita, a pneumologist and coordinator of the Sleep Medicine Centre (CMS) of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (CHUC); Mafalda Ferreira, a senior diagnostic and therapeutic technician of the CMS; Núria Madureira, a paediatrician in pulmonology and sleep at the Coimbra Paediatric Hospital; Ana Rita Álvaro, a researcher at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra (CNC UC) and a specialist in sleep disorders; and Mário Montenegro, the artistic director of Marionet and the documentary APNEA.
Sara Amaral, the coordinator of the CNC UC science communication office, will moderate the conversation.
ABOUT THE GUESTS
Isaías Craveiro
A 66-year-old sleep apnea patient diagnosed 3 years ago. He thinks that the sleep disorders should be better disseminated and lead to a screening in order to reduce the risks that patients can face due to a lack of knowledge about the symptoms and treatments related to the disease. There shouldn’t be any fear of being diagnosed, as treatments improve the patients’ quality of life.
Joaquim Moita
Pneumologist, coordinator of the Sleep Medicine Centre of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre. He diagnoses and follows patients with Sleep Apnea. Throughout the documentary, we can see his perspective as a pneumologist, a specialist in this disease who must understand the symptoms, monitor the patient and indicate the best way to diagnose or treat sleep apnea.
Mafalda Ferreira
Senior Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technician (TSDT) in Neurophysiology, Sleep Medicine Centre of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre. She has a very relevant role in the diagnosis of Sleep Apnea patients through sleep parameter analysis. She gives her perspective on the disease and the documentary, from a technical point of view.
Núria Madureira
Pediatrician in pneumology and sleep and in charge of the Sleep and Ventilation Laboratory at Coimbra Pediatric Hospital. Her participation stresses that Sleep Apnea is not a disease that only affects adults but also children. An important view on how this documentary can wake up children and adults to this subject.
Ana Rita Álvaro
Researcher at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra. She has been focusing on the study of sleep disorders, such as Sleep Apnea and Insomnia, and identifying new strategies that enable an earlier diagnosis and treatment. She tells us how the different aspects of Sleep Apnea, from the patient to the health professional, intersect with the world of research and how this documentary reflects this need for interaction and interdisciplinarity.
Mário Montenegro
Lecturer in Artistic Studies at the University of Coimbra and artistic director of Marionet, as well as responsible for the artistic direction of the documentary APNEA. Since 2018, he coordinates the project “To Sleep or Not to Sleep?“, researching and creating several artistic formats around Sleep Apnea, in close cooperation with the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, in particular with Ana Rita Álvaro’s research group. He will bring to the table the artistic perspective of the creative process behind the project.
