The “Event of the Unknown 2018” had its first edition on September 28th, at that year’s European Researchers’ Night. The first topic addressed in the Event of the Unknown 2018 was Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome, a breathing disorder characterised by breathing stops during sleep – apnoeas – which can vary in duration and frequency.

This event is one of the visible results of Unknownness Lab, a research and creation initiative aimed at tackling scientific challenges with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and artists. The base premise is to face unresolved scientific questions by using artistic tools, techniques and perspectives, to try and eventually achieve some progress or enlightening concerning those questions, as well as evaluate the process and any possible advantage arising from this interdisciplinary approach. It is composed of two kinds of moments: “inner” sessions focused on discussion and experimentation/creation by the participating multidisciplinary teams; and public events, in which the questions under discussion and the results of research are presented.
Unknownness Lab is an initiative by Marionet, together with Centro de Neurociências e Biologia Celular na Universidade de Coimbra (CNC – Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology), LIPA – Laboratório de Investigação e Práticas Artísticas (Laboratory of Research and Artistic Practices) and Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV), with support from Direção-Geral das Artes (DGArtes – Directorate-General for the Arts).
